The padlock means your site uses HTTPS, which encrypts the traffic between a visitor's browser and your server so nobody in between can read or tamper with it. That protects passwords, form entries, and card numbers in transit. What it does not mean is that the site itself is safe: a padlock says the connection is private, not that the code behind it is sound. Attackers can put a padlock on a bad site too.
Modern browsers now flag any site without HTTPS as "not secure," so this is table stakes, not a bonus.
