On April 30, 1993, CERN, the European physics lab where Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, released the underlying software into the public domain. No license, no fees, free for anyone to build on. It's hard to overstate how much rode on that choice. A patented or paywalled web would have looked nothing like the one we have.
Because the web is open, no single company owns your corner of it.
