Perplexity puts ads into AI answers

In November 2024, AI search engine Perplexity began testing ads on its platform. The format is new: sponsored follow-up questions shown beside an answer and clearly labeled as sponsored. Perplexity said answer content itself wouldn't be written or edited by advertisers, and framed ads as a way to share revenue with publishers.

It's a small experiment, but a telling one. As people shift from clicking blue links to reading AI-generated answers, advertisers and platforms are working out where sponsored placements even go.

For a small or mid-size business, there's no need to rush a budget into AI-search ads yet. The useful move is to make sure your site clearly states what you do, who you serve, and why, in plain language, because AI answer engines pull from that text. The businesses that get surfaced and cited will be the ones whose pages are easy for a machine to summarize accurately.
