Google Ads pushes AI Max into search campaigns

In May 2025, Google announced AI Max for Search campaigns, a one-click bundle of automation for standard Search ads. It broadens who sees your ads through keywordless matching, generates fresh headlines and descriptions from your landing pages, and can redirect clicks to whichever page it judges most relevant. Google reported advertisers typically see around 14 percent more conversions.

The trade is control for reach. Handing keyword matching and ad copy to the system means it will surface queries and wording you didn't choose, some of which won't fit your business.

For a small or mid-size business, treat AI Max as a test, not a default. Turn it on for one campaign, use the brand and location controls Google provides, and watch the search-terms report closely for the first few weeks. If it brings qualified clicks at your target cost, expand it. If it burns budget on loose matches, the controls are there to rein it back in.
